How to make a beautiful hospital gown and pillow as a gift for a child undergoing surgery.

A mom in my MOPS group has a daughter who was having surgery so I wanted to make her something meaningful and comforting. I found this tutorial to sew a hospital gown for a toddler. My friend's daughter has gone through the same surgery and suggested adding a pocket for the mobile monitor... I'm hoping it is big enough as the gown itself was so small that it was tough to add anything bigger.

I also made a matching pillow for her to hug to her chest if she needs to laugh, cough, etc.

This was such a fun and easy project. I love being able to tweak the gown to be appealing for a little girl. I LOVE this My Little Pony fabric-- my sons aren't into it so my son was a really good sport to model it for me. I wasn't sure if it would fit the little girl, but I was pretty sure he was bigger than her so I was happy to see it fit him.

For the most part, I followed the original tutorial. The only difference was that I serged my edges rather than turning them over to create the seams. This was a lot faster. I'm going to put some pictures of the process for serging in case that's helpful for anyone.

Cut the fabric for your DIY hospital gown for a toddler.
Step 1: Cut Fabric

Serge the back pieces of your fabric where the snaps will be for your DIY hospital gown for a toddler.
Step 2: Serge along back pieces (where they will snap together)

Serge together the back and front pieces for your DIY hospital gown for a toddler.
Step 3: Face front piece and back pieces right sides together. Back pieces will overlap. Serge along sides and the top of the shoulders. Also serge along the bottom edge of gown and the sleeves.

Turn DIY hospital gown right sides out. Add pocket(s).
Step 4: Turn side sides out.

Step 5: Add pocket. Now is a good time to make your pockets and add them. I added one big pocket to the back and one to the front. I tried to make the pockets as big as possible in width.

Add bias to the neckline of your DIY toddler hospital gown.
Step 6: Fold your bias tape around the neckline and sew on. You want a lot of bias tape left on either side... this will be used to tie the gown at the top.

Step 7: Turn the edges over for the sleeves and bottom of the gown and sew a straight stitch around to finish the edges.

Step 8: Add snaps along the back (or velcro) if desired. I recommend snaps over velcro because I hate washing velcro, but velcro is easier for a child to get out of without help.
I hope this helps! If you go to the original post, the author links gown patterns for infants too!

I also made a matching pillow. You can use a pillow form if you want, but I sewed a square pillow with matching fabric (I used the rest of my MLP fabric). I left a small opening to stuff with fiberfill, then filled it and hand sewed the pillow closed. Very simple.
