Customizing the Color: Lego or Duplo Building Plates

I’ve been intending on making my son a nice desk or side table to store his Duplo or Legos in for a while, but I did some searching on Amazon for the building plates to glue on top and they are UGLY. Logically, I know green is the color of the grass, but man. Ugly. And I wanted to make this part of the furniture and I like our furniture to look pretty because… Pinterest. #bloggingmomproblems

I did find some other colors, but they were more expensive that the green plate. I ended up buying the green plate, and I won some Rust-Oleum spray paint in a contest so I decided to put it to work! And it worked BEAUTIFULLY. It dried nicely and isn’t sticky, something that I’ve had issues with if I use cheaper spray paint.

All I did was lay out the building plate on a sheet to protect the floor (or a big box works great too). Then I carefully spray painted the plate, making sure not to put too much on. Let dry. You may need to apply more than one layer.

Glue the building plate to the furniture that you’re using. Check out my Drab to Dreamy Lego Desk.

If you want to pickup supplies online, here are two affiliate links to the items that I purchased. The building plate was about $16 at the time I bought it. My plate is black, but there’s a wide variety of colors available. I used Gorilla Glue to glue it down to my wood which seems to be working fine. We’ll see how it stands up to toddler wear and tear over time.
