Replacing iMac RAM

I've been having some issues with my iMac (2010) being pretty slow and I wanted to try to give it an upgrade without breaking the bank. I'm mostly trying to drag out the amount of time before I need a new computer. RAM is the easiest thing in the iMac to upgrade. Everything else is a giant pain in the butt. I found this site, iFixit, that lists upgrades for my computer with tutorials which was very helpful. I may try to upgrade my hard drive next, but that's a more expensive endeavor so I want to wait.

Your hard drive space is sort of like a human's long term memory... you store all this information in there and you occasionally need to fetch it for current use. The RAM holds all the short term stuff- what you're working with RIGHT now. So if you've got a thousand windows open on your browser, Microsoft Word, Adobe Photoshop, etc and you're wondering why your computer is so slow then it's often because your RAM can't support the amount of programs you have actively working. Most people don't need a lot of RAM because they aren't doing crazy amounts of stuff all at once. I'm always doing everything at once, including playing video games (I recently got back into World Of Warcraft- good bye life), so having enough RAM is important for me.

To make the upgrade, I just found the correct RAM for my computer on Amazon (affiliate link below) and bought the correct amount. If you go to the Apple symbol on the top left of your desktop, click "about this Mac" and then "memory," it will tell you what your memory situation is. Mine now says: "Your Mac contains 4 memory slots, each of which accepts a 1067 MHz DDR3 memory module." I believe I had two 2 gb DDR3 modules in there before and 2 empty slots... my computer allows up to 4 4 gb spots so now I'm maxed out for RAM.

Once they came in, I removed the panel on the bottom of the iMac, removed the old modules, and replaced with these. I'm going to keep these and probably try to resell them.

The new modules are working GREAT and a lot of the issues I was having before have resolved themselves. Initially I did have a couple times that same night where my computer crashed. But I left the RAM in overnight and it was fine the next day. Phew.

Important to Remember:

  • Make sure you get the correct RAM for your computer. VERY VERY important. You can't use a size that won't "fit" your computer.
  • Be careful handling your RAM.
  • Check out a tutorial by iFixit so you have specific instructions on upgrading the RAM for your specific computer.
