It's everything besides sugar. My oldest (3 years old) hates chicken. CHICKEN people. Guess what our staple meat is? Chicken. He doesn't even like chicken nuggets. So hot dogs have been a bit of a lifesaver because they're a quick food to make when nothing else works. When we're having a rough day and I realize that I haven't been able to get my toddler to eat any protein recently, hot dogs are our "go to" protein source. Now my youngest just turned one and I wanted to introduce him to hot dogs as well.

We love to grill hot dogs and hamburgers about 70% of the year (the non cold, snowy or rainy portion). This time though I decided to try something that I saw at a restaurant once... they'd wrapped bread around their hot dog and cooked it and it was SO COOL! I liked that it gave the kids a "handle" to hold the hot dog with. Theirs wrapped the entire hot dog in bread though and I feel that it's a bit too much to cover it completely so I decided to decrease how much bread we used.

  • Hot Dogs
  • Crescent Rolls (one container)
  1. Take your crescent rolls and cut them into eight long strips, roll the strips.
  2. Cut hot dogs lengthwise down the middle
  3. Wrap one crescent roll strip around hot dog.
  4. Bake at 350 F degrees for 15 minutes.

If you want to substitute, you could use pretzel or other bread dough (I bet homemade would be awesome!) in lieu of crescent rolls.

Verdict? The 3 year old was super cute holding his and munching away... I think he really liked being able to have his hot dog without a TON of roll in the way and I think he really thought it was cool to have it as finger food.

The one year old gobbled it all up. I did cut the hot dog up into small pieces separate from crescent roll for him. I don't think I've seen him gobble food like that before so obviously he is a giant hot dog fan.
