World Traveler Burlap Purse

Video tutorial for how to make a burlap purse.
I picked this burlap fabric up at a fabric sale recently and got antsy wanting to use it. I decided burlap would make a great purse!

I absolutely love how this purse turned out. I love the burlap that I got- the colors are perfect. The blue fabric I had wasn’t my favorite, but I loved the combination so it worked out well.

I used my sewing machine and serger to make this, but I think you could zigzag with your sewing machine or just skip serging if you don’t have a serger. I mostly just liked to serge the edges of the burlap I used because it seemed like it’d fray otherwise. Not 100% it was necessary, especially for some burlaps, but I’m not super familiar with working with burlap so don’t take my word for any of this.

I decided not to use stabilizer on this purse. I think it’s good without it, but some people prefer a stiffer purse. You might consider adding it and just fusing it to the inner cotton fabric if you want something less “floppy.”

Cuts of fabric:
  • Burlap : 20.5″ x 13″ (2), 20.5″ x 3.5″ (2)
  • Inner Fabric (blue): 20.5″ x 13″ (2), 20.5″ x 3.5″ (2)
And here’s the video tutorial:
