how to make your own calm down bottle for time outsI told my friend I was going to make this calm down bottle that I saw on Pinterest. My friend asked if said bottle had liquor... No, not THAT kind of calm down bottle.

This is for my son G to help him regulate better when he's very hyped up or angry. My intense little guy just doesn't know how to stop. The idea behind these is that they can get up from calm down corner when the glitter settles. If they get angry and throw it then of course it'll mean a longer sit time. Gosh I hope glue works to keep this cap on.

I used this tutorial and did the whole bottle of glitter glue... not thinking about the fact she was using a much small bottle of glitter glue. Don't do this. You only want to use a very little, like 1/10th of the bottle you're filling, according to this tutorial. I ended up needing to empty mine over several bottles and refilling with extra water to make them actually settle. Too full and they just stay super glittery forever (I assume, I wasn't waiting it out).

Here's me going crazy with too much...

I ended up using a ton of different bottles seeing that I needed to split it all up... the thin tall one is from some flavored water my mom had when she visited, there's a couple Gatorade bottles from our roommate Dan, two pill containers from my prenatal vitamins, and my favorite is a Powerade bottle, I believe- this bottle seems very sturdy, as do the vitamins containers, so I feel more confident my son won't be able to chuck it across the room and have it break open and spill everywhere. I hope.

Because I ended up with so many different bottles, I decided to have a "race" and time to see how long each one took to settle. I wrote on a paper 1-2-3-4-5 and shook each one, recording what time I shook each and then what time the glitter had mostly settled.

Here they are settled:

We will probably use the 1-2 minute ones. I am going to add a little more glitter and retime, but I think it should be about the same time. Keep in mind you need to add all the materials when it's still hot water or else the glue doesn't melt and it all separates.

Here is a link to our calm down corner that we'll keep these in.

Update: This worked really well to calm down my son after a tantrum, even though I hadn't used it as intended. Problem? He dropped it (accidentally) and the cap popped off. We're going to apoxy these shut, but hadn't gotten to it. I gave him to the prenatal vitamins bottle thinking that he wouldn't be able to get the childproof caps off. I'm not sure if he got the cap off and that's why it came off so easy when it fell or if it just hit the floor just right. Either way, it wasn't as horrific to clean up as I imagine... it fell on my hardwood floors. If it had fell on the carpet it might not have popped open.
