My friend and I hosted a play date to make care packages for the homeless, with the idea to put together bags we could hand out when we see someone in need standing by the road with a sign. I have been wanting to do care packages to handout to the homeless since I saw my friend at martial arts in Texas doing it with her two sons. It was such a great idea! I always feel bad not being able to do anything for these men and women, but I don't believe in handing out cash.

I did an internet search for homeless care package ideas and found The Play Date with a Purpose website and another site on Yahoo about what to put into a care package for the homeless.
For our play date, I provided a pudding pack, spoon, napkins, 2 granola bars, and bags. It was nice to use all of these old grocery bags. My pantry looks much less crowded without the piles of extra grocery bags! I also found some extra hygiene items to add in, as well as some hygiene items someone was giving away on Freecycle.

We had 5 moms attend and made 30 bags so we each got 6 bags to take with us to handout. I scheduled the play date for July 4th week so I'm not sure if we would've had a bigger turnout otherwise. I think this was probably a good number of people to have though.

I think I'm particularly looking forward to doing this once the kids get older because right now they can't really understand what it's for (2yr old and under), but later they'll be able to understand and help fill the bags. This is a good thing to start now though and it makes me feel warm and fuzzy to help people.

You do have to keep in mind... you'll have some people who really need and appreciate the bag, and others who just want money. It happens. If it happens, you smile and say I hope you have a great day and I'll keep this for someone who would like it. Modeling for our kids. Just because one person isn't appreciative doesn't mean there isn't one who it will make a huge difference for.

Included in each bag:
  • Pudding Snack Pack, Spoon, and 2 napkins
  • 2 Chewy Chocolate Chip Granola bars
  • Sun Chips
  • Bottle of water
  • Fruit snacks
  • A hygiene item (shampoo, toothbrush, etc.)
  • Peanut butter crackers

One of our completed bags from the play date.
