Here's just a few tips I've learned the hard way since I started my gardens. I'm excited to finally be seeing the fruits... and vegetables... of my labor.

Tomato Cages

Put the cages on ASAP if you're going to do tomato cages.
It's hard to put them into the cage once they've grown without breaking the plants.

Sometimes Buggies are Friends, Sometimes Not

When you notice something killing your plants (these are loopers killing my broccoli plants), do something about it. This stuff I bought is supposed to work AND be organic. Win!

This is what I got:

Lettuce and Timing Plantings

Lettuce... Don't plant it all at the same time unless you REALLY like
to eat salads. Like... A lot. And only at one time period.

Mine is growing on top of itself and I have tons to eat if I'm going to catch up. Oops. I think you're supposed to plant them at different times so they come to maturity at different points during the season. I looked up how to cut it so it'll grow back but I'm not convinced it is going to happen. I also was reading that it may not taste as good if you let it grow too big. I had some last week though and I thought it tasted normal. I bought small plants at the store and grew this lettuce above from it... I think growing it from seed is just as easy, basing that on the lettuce I did by seed (not pictured). It's also cheaper. I think it's worth doing by seed in terms of being easier to plant at different times.

To wash, fill a big sink with cold water and rinse. Easier than washing each leaf... like I did. Haha. Thanks Jerry for the tip... it should have maybe been obvious, but hey... I'm new to lettuce gardening.
