DIY Detergents, Follow-up

DIY Detergents Follow-up: diy detergents, diy dishwasher detergent, DIY dishwasher rinse, diy laundry detergent, saving money on common household products,

In February 2012, I made my own laundry detergent. You can check out the instructions here. I'd like to inform you that it's now August 2012 and I just used up the last of my ingredients making my last batch of detergent, except for the Borax which I had a few cups worth left. It cost me $16.87 to purchase all of the ingredients, and I've done laundry from February until August with the ingredients. My last batch will probably last me months. Yay! Note that I do at least 2-3 loads of cloth diaper laundry per week, as well as 2-3 loads of darks, 1-2 loads of whites, and 1-2 loads of towels and linens. That's a lot of laundry for less than $17! I am thrilled!

Anyhow, this got me thinking about homemade dishwasher detergent, and what do you know- the ingredients are baking soda and Borax. I had the leftover Borax from my laundry detergent and also a huge box of baking soda that we've been using to help unclog our drains. I used the information found on this tutorial to make my own detergent and now I have a lot to use, once my liquid name brand soap is used up. It also takes up a lot less room in the cabinet which is helpful and I can reuse my glass containers that I like to upcycle for these type of projects. Very exciting!

On the left is what I made using just 1 cup each of baking soda and Borax.

Complete it with homemade dishwasher rinse and you're good to go for a fraction of the price of store brand options.
