Blog Transfer #15: DIY Door Silencer

This was pretty simple to make, and only required a little bit of scrap fabric (I used flannel), some elastic, and a few minutes. Per the owner's shop information, this item can't be duplicated for profit, but it appears fine to make for personal use.

Here's how I made mine:

1. Cut out an 8.5" piece of flannel (width doesn't matter as much, I think mine was around 4") and fold it right sides together so that it's square.

2. Cut out a couple pieces of elastic (I eyeballed the length by putting a piece around my door knobs).

3. On each side of the square, put the elastic loops sandwiched between the two right sides of fabric.

4. Sew around the square, reinforcing the elastic (sew back and forth over it), and leave a small opening to turn and top stitch.

5. Turn and topstitch, closing the opening. You could be less lazy than me and iron it flat first. I didn't.

You're done. When not in use, you can hang it from the door by one elastic.

I tried this out and it seems to work well. I'm not sure if putting extra padding in would have been better, but this has the basic effect that I was looking for. This item would be great if you live in a home with angry kids (or adults) who like to slam doors. Nothing takes the wind out of their sails as much as trying to slam a door as hard as they can to make a point, just to have it close quietly behind them- or alternatively, bounce back at them.
