I know that sometimes your eco friendly family member or friend may be a bit confusing to you. What the h-e-double-hockey-sticks are they doing?! What can you buy them for a gift that they'll actually use? Why are they giving you crazy eyes for making them a disposable diaper cake for their baby shower?

I admit, I'm that friend/family member. My family came to town in October and I was going behind them, picking recyclables, reusables, and compostables out of the garbage can and they're staring at me in horror.

Needless to say, I was considering what type of gift guides I wanted to put together this year for my blog and an ecofriendly guide was my FAVORITE idea. Because... yo'... this is essentially my wishlist.

1. An Aquaponics Setup: The idea behind an aquaponics system is that it's a self sustainable system. It's supposed to act like the natural environment where everything is in balance. There are lots of options for these and they're DEFINITELY a realistic project to DIY. But you can also buy a setup. These setups allow you to keep your fish and also a small garden area over the fish tank... there's a grow light and a water pump that cycles dirty water into the plants.

Now, feel free to go for the gold and setup a huge one in the backyard greenhouse with tilapia, chickens, goats, and a whole ecosystem like something from a scifi movie (my dream setup)... but for those with limited funds, these indoor setups are pretty neat.

Aquaponics setups make a great gift.
2. A New Compost Bin: Quite frankly, I think most of us live with the strict policy that there's never "too many" compost bins. There's several types of bins: Open Bins / Tumbling Bins / Worm Bins. You could also pick up an indoor compost bin that does the composting electronically.

For those who can't compost outdoors, these indoor compost bins would be a nice gift.

3. Reusable Water Bottles: Anyone else obsessed? I love a good quality water bottle. I carry them *everywhere.* I've found that I prefer water bottles with a spout because they're easier to clean and less apt to get mold inside the straw. I don't love how heavy the stainless steel ones are, but you really can't beat how cool and fresh they keep the water.

Reusable water bottles make great gifts.

4. Wool Dryer Balls: These are awesome for getting your clothes dry WITHOUT spending money on dryer sheets.

Wool dryer balls are a great alternative to dryer sheets and would make a good stocking stuffer.

5. A Good Quality Clothesline and Clothespins: Starting to see a trend? Old fashioned is in- except we've put a twist on old fashioned to make it better than ever. But drying clothes on the line is better for your clothes and for the environment. Also, if you know someone who is planning to travel, a travel sized clothesline is a great idea for them to dry bathing suits on vacation.

6. Reusable Egg Containers: Does the person raise their own ducks or chickens? These spiral egg dispensers are a great alternative to using plastic or cardboard containers. Or you could get a reusable egg carton
Reusable egg containers would be a great gift for a chicken lover. This is an alternative for storing chicken eggs.

7. Glass Storage Containers: These are fantastic and great for replacing plastic containers.
Glass containers are amazing alternatives to the plastic versions.

8. The Complete Guide to Reusable Cloth Products: Okay, shameless plug for my own book here! But it's really a great all around book that talks about cloth products.

The Complete Guide to Using, Laundering, and Sewing Reusable Cloth is a good resource for someone who loves cloth.

9. Greenhouse: Pretty much any greenhouse. Or a sun room. I think most of us with a green thumb would love this.

A greenhouse, sun room, or other planting items would make a great gift for a gardener.

10. Rechargeable Batteries: These would make great stocking stuffers!
Rechargeable batteries would make a great stocking stuffer.

11. Reusable K-Cups: These would also be good stocking stuffers. These are refillable so you just fill them with coffee grounds.
Another great stocking stuffer idea is reusable k-cups!

12. Solar Lights: I love our solar lights. No batteries to mess with. They work great for my needs.

Solar lights would be a fun gift if you know someone who is outdoors at night a lot.

13. Chicken Coop: Just throwing this out there. Just sayin'... they might love chickens. Or ducks. Or both. And yes, Amazon actually has chicken coops for sale on there, haha.

If you know they love and want chickens, then a chicken coop would make a fantastic gift.
14. Nest Thermostat: These are really clever thermostats that keep track of you via your phone and adjust your heat/cooling accordingly.

The Nest thermostat is a great gift that will help them save electricity and therefore money.

15. Cloth Diapers: You may think this is a weird thing, but if you know someone who cloth diapers and is OBSESSED with cute prints, then this is the right gift for them. Wet bags also make great gifts.

Anyone who cloth diapers will likely tell you there's no such thing as too many cloth diapers.

16. Reusable Christmas Bags: Reusable gift bags are AWESOME. They are easy to fold up and store when not in use, they are easy to "wrap" gifts with, and they make cleanup a breeze after the holidays. I made all of my DIY reusable gift bags, but I may pick a couple up to use for Santa gifts this year. You can use your Silhouette or Cricut to add your child's name to them.

Reusable Christmas bags are super cute options for wrapping gifts this season.

17. Other Reusable Items: There are lots of items that have reusable alternatives. They make great gifts. I have quite a few tutorials on how to make your own reusable items and my book also includes detailed tutorials as well. But here's a few you might like:
