Indoor Gardening with LED Grow Lights from Grow Hobby
LED bulbs! I love them... they're more eco friendly and while expensive initially, they last forever. Yay for no changing bulbs. We've actually been working towards converting all the bulbs in our home to LED. They've been kind on our electric bill.

So when I had the opportunity to try out an LED Grow Light from GrowHobby for this blog review, I couldn't resist. I've been wanting one so I could keep (and start) some plants indoors. We get some natural light in our house, but I never felt like it was quite enough to rely on by itself.

I have this window in my kitchen that's the only window in my house that is out of reach of my children who love, love, love to "help." It's where I've been attempting to grow some various herbs or flowers, but there's not a lot of room on there for plants and for some reason plants die up there. It drives me nuts and I've been LONGING for a place to keep some herbs indoors (particularly basil).

I got this in the mail, but then I procrastinated because I wanted my setup to be perfect and I realized I needed additional supplies, like the cord.

Finally everything was in and I decided to setup our corner hutch in our living room as my indoor garden. It was the perfect corner to hang the light and the plants would also receive some natural light. These bulbs are okay for some plants, particularly starting seeds, but it may not be enough light for other plants. This is why I wanted an area with natural light that would hopefully help compensate if any of my plants needed a little extra light. For my purposes, that may not have been necessary, but I felt it was better safe than sorry.

I purchased the hanging light cord that the company makes for this, but these bulbs can also be plugged into a standard socket. Note that this bulb is HEAVY so you want something that can support it.

I hung it from the ceiling and added plants to my hutch. I've got a basil and aloe vera plant, as well as a plant I'm hoping to bring back (please please please) that unfortunately didn't survive my windowsill. I'm also starting some lavender seeds in egg shells under it.

I ended up picking up a Meyer's lemon tree as well, but it will stay outside for the summer. I plan to use this grow light (or purchase a second) to use for the lemon tree once the weather gets colder. I found a lemon tree at Pong's Orchard in Fulton, Maryland if you happen to be local... they had lots of great fruit trees for indoors. Nobody else seemed to be carrying them when I purchased mine, but they had a ton, including ones with lemons already growing on them.

So far these LED lights seem to be doing the trick to keep my plants alive. Now all I need to do is remember to water them! I'm excited to try these out next year for starting my veggies indoors... I was so behind this year and ended up just purchasing seedlings.

Technical information from the manufacturer:- Fits Standard North American Bulb Socket (e26 Base)
- Power: 12 Watt (Low Cost to Use!)
- Bulb Life: 50,000 Hours+ (Long-Lasting!)
- Light Output: 800 Lumens
- LED Ratio: Red (660nm 3 pcs; 630nm 6pcs) and Blue (460nm 3pcs)
Simply put, our LED grow light runs on only 12 watts of power.  It barely uses any energy and therefore is extremely cost effective compared to other grow lights.
Our grow light uses LEDs instead of CFL, metal halide, or high pressure sodium.  This means you do not need any additional equipment such as a cooling fan, ballast, outside heat sink, etc.  All you have to do is simply screw in our grow light into any normal light socket and turn it on!
Our LED grow light is not good for intense hydroponic needs.  It is best to grow seedlings, clone plants, grow herbs, care for tender flowers like orchids, and even grow leafy veggies year round.
Our grow light does not get hot and does not cause any heat build up to damage your plants.  Even after the grow light has been on for 12 hours it is barely warm to the touch.
