The Great Outdoors (Our Yard), Part V: Starting to Dig

I am really excited about having a yard now and being able to have a garden this coming growing season. I really have no clue what I'm doing though. I've been pinning everything on Pinterest in an attempt to figure out what and how to plant so that I can have a successful gardening experience. I have gotten very discouraged in the past when I tried to bucket garden and my plants died. I'm hoping if I do a good job this season then it'll keep up my momentum for next summer. The big thing for me is planting everything in a timely manner which is a HUGE struggle for me every year. So needless to say, planting time was like, "BAM HERE I AM!" And I can't get the roots up so Daddy B is stuck with that awful task. There's a LOT of garden to dig if we base it on how many seed packets I got... obviously I was a little overambitious. I didn't realize how much space EACH plant takes up. Tomatoes need 2-3' each... that's a LOT of space... you're talking a 2-3' radius around the plant. Know how many tomato seedlings I've already planted? Like 13. Sooooo 26'x3' garden bed would be required minimum for JUST my tomatoes if I planted them all. My plan is to plant the strongest/biggest ones, however, and then give away the extras.

We started by digging out our garden area to get up all of the roots (there are so many!), laid down about 10 layers of newspaper in each section, wetting it (not sure this is necessary), and then piling the dirt back on top.

So do note that the "garden" is only about 6'x3' by my guestimate right now and that killed Daddy B to dig manually. The roots really suck. We wouldn't need to dig quite as far down except the roots won't come up/out if we don't. I'm also almost out of newspaper to use! Darn it!

I did a pH test and found our soil is about a 7.0-7.5 which will have to do. We are trying to save a little money and putting in special soil and raised beds was expensive. I may mix in some soil to help lower it a little. I used those other vials, but nothing seemed to be working correctly except the pH so hopefully it won't matter, haha.

Baby G mostly wanted whatever we were using and was mad a lot not to have our undivided attention (usually he cashes in on that sort of opportunity, but today was not that day), but I got one cute picture of him in his wagon...

Hiiiii everyone!

He looked like this the rest of the time...

GIMME GIMME NOW! That jar of mud looks AMAZING!

Progress on the seedlings from a week ago:

The tomatoes are winning!

New additions to the indoor garden:

Cucumber in an upcycled pork container... I just added soil to it and put the seeds in.

Just needed one spearmint plant (yes I'm aware I spelled it wrong on the jar) so I put it in an empty kcup container and turned the jar upside down so it would be like a greenhouse and not block out the light. I may hot glue the kcup to the lid at some point. Too lazy right now.

Soooo many seed packets, sooooo little time.
