My friends were moving and had six bookshelves that they wanted to get rid of. We needed bookshelves. They were worried that these weren't usable, but we decided to make them work.

First, most of them were the same type of bookshelf so we took them all apart and matched the pieces (they still had the letters on them from when they were installed)... Ie. all the "M's in one pile, etc. For the two bookshelves in our living room, we picked out the best pieces for each letter and put the bookshelves back together with those pieces. We ordered extra hardware for the shelves seeing some pieces were missing.

Bought these 2 for $5
cheapo boxes from Ikea
to help organize.
They'll do the trick
until I get motivated to
make or buy something
a little sturdier.
The two shelves upstairs needed to hold toys on the bottom two shelves and DVDs on the top shelves. I bought baskets for the DVDs to make them harder for Baby G to pull off and hopefully to make it look a little more attractive.

My big plan was to reinforce the backs with pallet wood, but I'm holding off for now. I was also going to paint the shelves, but the paint looks fine for now and I'm going to hold off.

Here's the two best looking shelves, in our living room.

I used two black shelves down in our basement/playroom. One of them was an old one of ours... I tipped that on its side to put the keyboard and to also use as a changing area. I added a curtain around the outside so it won't show the shelves. I can put things underneath it for storage... my plan is to throw some spare diapers (and maybe some snacks?) under there for Baby G.

I haven't made the changing pad yet because I'm still considering how I'd like to do it, but I want to use matching fabric and add some cushioning to it.

We still had one large bookshelf left over, and two half bookshelves. There was a bunch of leftover pieces that we could have used to build those half bookshelves into big bookshelves, but we opted not to do that because some of the pieces weren't in great shape. Instead, we used two of those three bookshelves upstairs in our master closet for organizing our clothing and shoes. We have this amazing closet, but we'll need to hold off on the custom designed closet space until we have the time and money to sink into redoing it. Haven't decided what to use the smaller one for.

Here's Baby G, enjoying the remaining pieces of shelf... he loves taking the hardware out and putting it back in. Favorite toy ever right now.
