DIY: Dr. Seuss Birthday, Part IV {Shirt}

A Dr. Seuss Birthday Party: Shirt Applique

This will be broken down into three different blog posts, to cover:
Here I'll be discussing how I made my Dr. Seuss Shirt.

I had a bunch of 18 month onesies that I considered using, but I've had pretty poor luck with the brand (Gerber I think) because they're thinner, super stretchy, and my embroidery machine likes to eat them. It could be user error or the type of stabilizer that I used, but my friend mentioned also having a similar problem with certain types of onesies. I imagine they're great shirts for other crafty purposes, such as tie-dye, but I'll save them to worry over another day. In the meantime, I bought this 3-pack of teeshirts off in hopes they'd be easier to work with:

I bought this fabric for the applique:

Unfortunately, Daddy B- just as I was about to start the applique- pointed out that the Cats on the fabric weren't going to fit on my #1... darnit! So I used the striped fabric instead to match the pants.
I got this applique off Etsy for my shirt. The nice thing about this is that there's multiple numbers to use, in case you want to do more than one shirt for different children's birthdays or if your child just loves Dr. Seuss so much that you do every birthday party with this theme... I dunno. I did the 4x4 version.
Not going to give a tutorial on the applique because I'm still not confident I'm doing it right, but here's some pictures of my process:
